Slovenian Wine Tasting: In Ljubljana or in the Vipava Valley? Castle Cellar, Wine Bar, Boat and Vineyard Compared
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
Short answer: for a first Slovenian tasting, stay in the city. The wine tasting in the castle cellar is the most reviewed by a wide margin: €55 per person, 2 hours, seven wines with appetizers, 4.8 stars from 252 reviews. Go out to the Vipava Valley only if you want to stand in a winery, and then be clear about who drives.
What the city tastings have in common
Slovenia has three wine regions, and the tastings in town are built to show you all of them in one sitting: Podravje in the northeast, Posavje in the south and Primorska in the west. Most of them give you five or seven pours led by a sommelier. Three of them are closed to minors: the castle cellar says guests must be over 18, and the wine bar and the orange wine tasting list children under 18 as not suitable. The castle cellar and the orange wine tasting also list pregnant women as not suitable. For the other options the booking page shows no age limit, so ask before you bring a teenager.

The castle cellar, and what it leaves out
The cellar is in the basement of the wine shop at Ljubljana Castle, and the meeting point is Grajska planota 1. The tasting is in English, with games and facts between the glasses, and you take home a certificate as an “ambassador of Slovenian wines”.
Two things are not included, and the booking page lists both: chocolates and the funicular ticket. The funicular is not part of the price, so you either walk up or buy the ride separately. A recent reviewer adds that the footpath can be slippery after rain and that you should leave early to be there on time. For how the funicular and the castle tickets work, see our comparison of castle tickets and guided walks.
The smaller rooms
The wine bar and the orange wine tasting both cap the group, at 10 and 8 guests, and both rate at 4.7 and 5.0 from only 7 and 8 reviews. That is not enough to rank them above the castle cellar, but it tells you what you are buying: a quieter table. The orange wine tasting is the narrower subject: five wines made by fermenting white grapes on the skins, with water and a snack of bread, cheese, Karst prosciutto, olive oil and nuts. Extra wine beyond the five is not included, and neither is a meal. The listing also marks it wheelchair accessible.
If you want wine and a dinner substitute in one, the food and wine tour with a sommelier starts at the central market, takes three hours and pairs every dish with wine. It costs about twice the cellar tasting, and it is a food tour with wine, not the other way round.
The vineyard and the Vipava Valley
CNN Travel describes the Vipava Valley as less than an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, with scores of wineries and local grapes such as zelen and pinela. That is the case for going: you taste in the place where the wine is made.
The case against is simple. A tasting means several glasses, and then you still have to get back. On your own you need a driver who does not drink; compare cars for Ljubljana on Discover Cars and check the excess and the deposit before you book. A guided tour solves the driving but not the price. The Postojna and Vipava tour is the only Vipava option listed here, it has no reviews yet, and at €199 for 8.5 hours it makes the wine one of three stops. The vineyard trip is a drive to the outskirts of Ljubljana, not to Vipava, and has two reviews.
When to skip the tasting
Skip the castle cellar, the wine bar and the orange wine tasting if anyone in your group is under 18. Skip the boat if wine is the point and the river is not: you pay €60 for five wines, against €55 for seven in the cellar. And skip the vineyard trip if you have only an afternoon.
Which one
For most visitors the castle cellar tasting is the one: seven wines, the most reviews, the lowest price. Take the orange wine tasting if you already know ordinary Slovenian whites and reds. More options sit under food and wine tours in Ljubljana.
