Ljubljana Old Town Tour: Small-Group Walk, Food Walk or Bike Tour?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
Short answer: for a first look at the Old Town, take the small-group guided city tour: about €21.60 per person, 2 hours, 646 reviews at 4.7 stars. Swap it for the funicular walk if the castle is the point, for the bike tour if you would rather ride, or for the food walk if lunch is part of the plan.
What the walks cover
The small-group tour is led by a licensed national tourist guide. The booking page lists six stops: the Central Market, Prešeren Square, the National and University Library, Ljubljana Castle, Nebotičnik and Congress Square, with a 20-minute stop at the castle and about ten minutes at each of the others. The castle visit is marked optional. The listing also describes the Central Market as designed by Jože Plečnik, and mentions the Triple Bridge and the Baroque and Art Nouveau facades along the Ljubljanica. It is marked wheelchair accessible. Meals and drinks are not included, and neither is transport to the start.
Languages offered are English, Croatian, German, Serbian and Slovenian. If you read this in Italian, French, Spanish or Dutch, that matters: for those languages the choice is thinner. There is an Old Town walk in French for €134.39 per group of up to 8 (4 reviews) and a walk to the castle in Italian for €21.17 (19 reviews, 4.7 stars). No Spanish or Dutch walk appears in the listings.

Walk or funicular walk
The two 2-hour walks are close in price, rating and review count (646 and 668 reviews). The difference is the castle: the small-group tour makes the castle an optional stop on foot, while the other one includes the funicular ride up. For the tickets and what the funicular costs, see our comparison of castle tickets and guided walks. If the castle is the reason you are here, read that first.
The bike tour
The bike tour runs 3 hours with a local guide, and the bike and helmet are included. It goes beyond the Old Town: the listing names Prešeren Square, the Triple Bridge, the Dragon Bridge and the Central Market, then Plečnik’s House in Trnovo, Špica on the river, the Metelkova district and the Botanical Garden. The meeting point is the tour agency’s office. You must be able to ride a bike, and baby strollers are not allowed. Food and drinks are not included.
It costs about €12 more than the walk and covers more ground in an hour longer. There is also a self-guided e-bike option at €40 with a single review, which is too thin to judge.
The food walk
The food walk lasts 4 hours and meets in front of the tourist information centre next to the Triple Bridge. The operator says it should cover your lunch, dinner and a city tour, and the price includes the tastings of food, wine and oil. It runs with a minimum of 2 people. At €90 it is about four times the price of the plain walk, so judge it as a meal first. If wine is the point, our comparison of Slovenian wine tastings lists the alternatives.
When to skip it
Skip the guided walks if you like to wander alone and mainly want to know where things are: the Old Town is compact. Skip the bike tour if you do not ride regularly. Skip the private and architecture tours unless you want that much attention: the private walk at €90 per person and the Plečnik tour at €159 have 3 and 2 reviews.
Which one
For most visitors the small-group guided city tour is the one: close to the cheapest, with 646 reviews, in several languages. Add the river with the walking tour and river cruise, and see Ljubljana city tours for the rest.
