Is Ljubljana Castle Worth It? Funicular, Entry Ticket and Guided Walk Compared

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: yes, for the view alone, and the easiest way to get there is the funicular. If you want to see the inside, buy the castle ticket with the funicular return, which the castle sells at €19 for an adult. If you want the old town explained on the way up, a guided walk that includes the funicular costs about the same. The most reviewed way to buy is the castle entry ticket with optional funicular ride, from €15 per person, 4.3 stars from 1,046 reviews.

What the castle charges

The castle’s own price list gives €19 for an adult with the funicular return when you pay at the castle, and €17.10 when you buy online. Children from 7 to 18, students and pensioners pay €13.50, or €12.15 online. A family ticket for up to two adults and at least one child between 7 and 18 is €46. The funicular on its own is €6 return for an adult, €4.50 for children, students and pensioners, and €15 for a family.

The ticket covers more than the ride. It includes the viewing tower, the 4D film Virtual Castle, video mapping in the casemate, the Museum of Puppetry, the permanent exhibition on Slovenian history and the temporary exhibition halls. A separate guided Time Machine tour exists as well, and it runs on set days and at set times that change with the season.

That is the benchmark. A €15 listing is not directly comparable: it offers the funicular as optional, and the description does not say how it is priced against the official ticket. Look at the booking page to see what the €15 buys on your date before you assume it is a saving.

Funicular or on foot

A footpath climbs to the castle from the old town, so you can also walk up and ride down, or the reverse. Pay the €6 for the return if you are with small children, if it is hot, or if you want to arrive with energy left for the exhibitions.

If you are not going in, you need at most the funicular: the view over the red roofs of the old town is the reward for the climb. The ticket is for the exhibitions, the tower and the film.

What a guide adds

OptionDurationFromRatingWhat the listing says
Castle Entry Ticket with Optional Funicular Ride–€15 per person4.3 (1,046)entry at your own pace, optional funicular, Time Machine tour of six historical periods
Guided Walk & Funicular Ride to Ljubljana Castle2 hours€21 per person4.6 (668)Baroque squares, bridges, the market, funicular to the castle

Walking Guided Tour of the Castle in Italian2 hours€21 per person4.7 (19)guided in Italian

The two big guided options cost €21 and €21.60 for two hours. Set against the €19 official ticket with funicular, the walk adds a guide and the old town for a few euros more, provided the castle ticket is part of that price. The listing mentions the funicular ride; it does not say the castle’s exhibitions are included, and nothing in the description tells you whether you go inside or only up. Confirm that before you book.

See dates and prices for the guided walk and funicular ride to Ljubljana Castle

The first listing names the funicular ride to the castle; the second names the castle among the sights of the old town. Neither description says how long you spend at the top. If you are happiest wandering without a schedule, you do not need either: the old town is small and walkable, and the official ticket is easy to buy yourself.

When it is a bad idea

Skip the exhibitions if you are short on time and only want a viewpoint; the funicular and a walk around the grounds are enough. Skip a guided walk if you do not like groups: the small-group listing at €21.60 and 4.7 stars is the better choice for that. And for a rainy day, check the programme first, because the view and the courtyard are the main draw.

Which one

Most visitors on their own should buy the official castle ticket with the funicular, or the castle entry ticket with optional funicular ride if they want the booking in advance. First-timers who want the story of the old town should take the guided walk with the funicular. More city options are listed under Ljubljana city tours.
