Lake Bled from Ljubljana: Day Tour, Small Group or Public Bus, and Is Vintgar Gorge Worth Adding?

Short answer: Lake Bled is one of the few big day trips from Ljubljana that works well on your own, because a direct bus runs there. A tour earns its price when you want the castle, the island and a guide in about six hours, or when Bled is one stop in a longer day. For the lake alone, the cheapest well-reviewed option is the Lake Bled day tour at €49 per person, 6 hours, 4.8 stars from 974 reviews. The most reviewed is the trip to Lake Bled and Bled Castle at €74, with 1,687 reviews.

Doing it yourself

A direct bus runs from Ljubljana’s bus station to Bled, taking roughly an hour to an hour and twenty minutes. The fare is in the single digits in euros each way; check the current price at the station or on the bus operator’s site before you plan around it. Trains also run about hourly and are a little faster, but Bled’s station, Lesce-Bled, is about 4 kilometres from the lake, so you add a short local bus.

Add the one cost almost everyone pays: the traditional wooden pletna boat to the island. The municipal tourism site lists €20 per person for the return trip and €10 for children between 4 and 12. The boat leaves when it is full, and the season sets the hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from November to March, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in April and October, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from May to September. A day by bus, with the pletna but without the castle ticket or lunch, therefore comes to roughly €34 or a little over. That is below the €49 tour, and it leaves you free to walk the path around the lake at your own pace.

What you give up by going on your own is mostly the planning. Nobody tells you which order to do things in, and the castle sits on a cliff above the lake with a climb to reach it.

What the tours put on offer

The descriptions in the listings are short, so the table shows what they actually say. Whether the castle ticket or the boat ride is included is not always stated; check the booking page, because the difference between the cheap and the dear trip is often exactly that.

The €49 and €74 trips both run six hours to the same place, and the descriptions do not say what the extra €25 pays for. Read the booking pages before assuming it buys more. The small-group tour costs €5.60 less than the €74 trip, runs half an hour shorter and caps the group at 8, and it has the highest rating of the three. If you would rather not tour in a large group, that is the one to pick.

Vintgar Gorge: worth it, but not in six hours

Vintgar is a wooden walkway through a narrow gorge a short way from Bled. The operator describes 1.6 kilometres of path and allows more than three hours for the experience, and it recommends booking a date online because the number of people let in at once is limited. The season matters too, so confirm the gorge is open on your dates.

The combined day trip to Bled and Vintgar Gorge runs 10.5 hours at €121, and the listing also names Bohinj and the town of Škofja Loka. It is the right trip if you want the gorge, because squeezing it into a six-hour lake tour is not what those listings promise. If you only want the lake, do not pay for the gorge.

When Bled is part of a bigger day

Some trips use Bled as one stop of several. The Savica Waterfall, Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled tour runs 8 hours at €80 with 4.9 stars from 1,519 reviews, and a longer version at €94 for 9.5 hours. They fit more sights into the day, which means less time at the lake. For the lake together with the cave, see our guide to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle; the trips combining both are sold under Lake Bled tours.

Which one

On your own with a bus ticket and the pletna, Bled costs less than any tour and gives you more time at the lake. With a tour, the Lake Bled day tour at €49 is the one to book for most people, and the small group at €68.40 if you want fewer people around you. Keep the Vintgar Gorge trip for the day when the gorge is the reason you are going.
