Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle from Ljubljana: Tickets, Tour or Drive Yourself?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Short answer: if you have no car, book a trip that includes the castle. The cave alone is easy by train or bus, Predjama Castle is not. The most reviewed option is the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle tickets and tour at €114 per person, 6 hours, 4.8 stars from 2,936 reviews. If you are driving anyway, buy the official combined ticket and skip the tour.
What the official ticket costs
The cave operator sells a combined ticket for the cave and the castle at €49.90 for an adult, €39.90 for ages 16 to 25 and €29.90 for children 6 to 15. Children up to 5 pay €2. The castle visit does not have to happen on the same day: the operator allows 30 days for the second sight after the cave. The cave visit itself is fixed to a time slot on the day you choose.
That €49.90 is the number to hold every tour against. A tour has to give you something for the difference: the transport, a guide, or both.
What a visit actually involves
The cave tour is a 3.5-kilometre ride on an electric train into the mountain, followed by a guided walk through the chambers of about 1.5 kilometres. Allow around an hour and a half underground. The temperature stays around 10 °C all year, so bring a jacket even in August; the operator rents warm cloaks. Check-in is easier if you arrive about 30 minutes before your slot.
Predjama Castle sits in the middle of a vertical cliff about 123 metres high, and has done for more than 700 years. It is a separate stop, roughly 10 kilometres from Postojna.
Without a car
Postojna is simple. Trains and buses run from Ljubljana, and the journey takes roughly an hour. The cave park is a walk of about 15 minutes from the station, which is worth knowing before you plan the timing of your slot.
Predjama is where it gets awkward. We found no regular public transport from Postojna to the castle; the usual solution is a taxi, which means arranging the return in advance or hoping one turns up. A bus to Postojna, a taxi out and back, then the way home turns a half-day outing into a full one, and the taxi fare is on top of the ticket. If the castle is the reason you are going, that is the point at which a trip stops being a luxury.
Which trip, and for whom
The listings differ less in what they visit than in what is included, and the descriptions do not always say. Check the booking page for tickets before comparing prices.
| Trip | Duration | From | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle Tickets and Tour | 6 hours | €114 per person | 4.8 (2,936) | tickets in the title |
| Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Tour | 5.5 hours | €63.90 per person | 4.9 (528) | transfer for up to 8 people with a driver-guide |
| Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle Guided Trip | 6 hours | €72 per person | 4.6 (214) | guided, with a castle tour |
| Postojna cave & Predjama castle half day | 5.5 hours | €106 per person | 4.8 (208) | tickets in the title |
| Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle small group tour | 5 hours | €68 per person | 4.6 (38) | up to 8 people |
| Tour to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle | 6 hours | €49 per person | 4.9 (74) | 10% discount on entrance tickets |
The arithmetic is the useful part. The €49 trip offers a discount on entrance tickets rather than tickets themselves, so the cave and castle are an extra cost on the day. The €63.90 and €72 trips do not say in their descriptions whether tickets are included; if they are not, add the €49.90 and the €63.90 trip costs about the same as the €114 one, while the €72 trip costs more. The €114 and €106 trips name tickets in the title, so the comparison is straightforward: you pay roughly €64 or €56 more than the official ticket for the transport and the guide.

The case for driving
The distance from Ljubljana to Postojna is about 50 kilometres on the motorway, a little under an hour. Driving yourself lets you choose the time slot rather than inherit one, and the €49.90 ticket is the whole cost besides fuel. For two people that is the cheapest way to see both sights. For a family of four with children between 6 and 15 the official tickets come to €49.90 × 2 plus €29.90 × 2, which is €159.60 against a tour price multiplied by four.
Slovenian motorways need an electronic vignette, which you buy before you drive onto the road. Compare rental cars for Ljubljana on Discover Cars and check the excess and the deposit before you book, because the headline daily rate does not show either.
The drawbacks are real. You are bound to the cave’s time slot, and if you are late nobody holds it for you. You also need a driver who is happy to take the wheel for the whole day.
What to be careful about
Do not assume a day trip to Postojna leaves time for Ljubljana in the evening. A six-hour trip means a fixed slot, a check-in 30 minutes early and a castle whose opening hours shrink in autumn and winter. Opening hours of the castle and the cave tour times change with the season, so look at the operator’s timetable for your date before choosing a departure.
The cave is cold and damp, and the walk is on paths. Wear shoes with grip. If you are unsure about mobility, ask the operator before booking rather than relying on a listing.
Which one to choose
Without a car and with the castle on your list, take the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle tickets and tour: it has by far the most reviews and the tickets are in the title. With a car, buy the official ticket and drive. If you only want the cave and are happy on public transport, go by train and buy the cave ticket yourself; you do not need a tour for that.
